Why I Fell Back in Love with Royal Caribbean’s Classic Ships

After spending the past five years sailing exclusively on Royal Caribbean’s newest and biggest ships — including the incredible Star of the Seas — I recently found myself boarding Independence of the Seas for a 7-night Northern Europe itinerary.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how it would compare.

After all, I’ve become used to the cutting-edge entertainment, vast dining options, and jaw-dropping neighbourhoods that the newer ships offer. But as soon as I stepped onboard, something unexpected happened — I felt that spark of connection and nostalgia that reminded me why I fell in love with cruising in the first place.

The Joy of Connection

On Independence of the Seas, I found a rhythm and intimacy that can sometimes get lost on the mega-ships.

Within just a few days, I knew the names of the bartenders, the cruise director, and even a few of the talented performers who greeted us after each show. There’s something genuinely special about that — a sense of familiarity and warmth that makes your cruise feel personal, like you’re part of a floating community rather than one of thousands of passengers.

The staff seemed to have more time to engage, share stories, and add thoughtful touches that elevated the whole experience. It reminded me how those human connections — not just the onboard attractions — are what make a sailing memorable.

More Value, Less Rush

There’s also something to be said for value — both in price and in pace. Smaller ships like Independence often represent incredible value for what you receive. With fewer crowds, I didn’t need to plan my day around reservations or app alerts. Loungers by the pool were easy to find, dining was relaxed and enjoyable, and every evening felt unhurried.

The focus shifted from “doing it all” to simply enjoying each moment. That sense of calm and space gave our Northern Europe sailing a refreshingly old-school cruise feel — and I loved every minute of it.

Classic Ships, Unique Itineraries

Another perk of Royal Caribbean’s classic ships is the itineraries they sail. Independence of the Seas took us to charming Northern European ports that aren’t always accessible to the newest mega-ships. We explored cobblestoned towns, historic harbours, and smaller cities throughout France and Spain that felt authentic and less commercialized. It was a reminder that sometimes the real adventure lies off the beaten path — and the ship you choose can make all the difference.

It’s Not About Bigger — It’s About Balance

Don’t get me wrong — I’ll always be impressed by the scale and innovation of Royal Caribbean’s newest vessels. The Star of the Seas offers experiences that redefine what cruising can be. But sailing on Independence reminded me that sometimes, less really is more.

Smaller ships bring a sense of connection, simplicity, and charm that’s easy to forget amid the buzz of the newest launches. It’s not about choosing one over the other — it’s about finding balance. There’s room to love both the high-tech marvels and the classic favorites that deliver heartfelt hospitality and incredible value.
